Students Invited To Apply For Police Community Scheme

Police officers visited KSA to encourage student to apply for a place on a new youth project that is being launched to challenge negative perceptions of young people.

The Jam in the Hood project has worked successfully in Corby and is now being rolled out in Kettering.

Young people aged between 13 and 16 years who live in the town can apply for one of 15 places on the project, which starts in September.

They will be involved in community activities alongside Safer Community Teams and will be tasked with surveying the public to see what they think the police should be focussing on.

They will also be involved in some of Northamptonshire Police's Operation Guardian activities to crack down on incidents of burglary and car crime.

The 12-week programme, which includes an ASDAN accreditation, will offer students the chance to visit specialised police departments such as the firearms, police dogs and helicopter units.

Sgt Ash Tuckley said: "The key to changing perceptions of young people is to get them involved in community events.

"If the public are being asked questions outside a shop by a young person who wants to improve their community, that goes some way in helping to combat the negative perceptions of young people hanging around outside shops.

"If the programme is a success in September, it's something we'd like to do every year."

Students from all the secondary schools in Kettering will be invited to apply for a place.

The deadline for applications is June 30th and with many more applicants than places expected, the competition will be strong.

Officers advised applicants to show an awareness of the diversity in their communities, give examples of voluntary work and to explain clearly why they want to be part of Jam in the Hood.

Those who impress with their application forms will then be invited for an interview before a final decision is made.
