A team of Year 11 students spent three days at the GreenPatch on the Grange estate in Kettering earlier this month as part of their Award of Personal Effectiveness (AoPE)

The nine boys in the group constructed a raised deck walkway in the duck enclosure.  Their first task was to produce a plan and consider safety issues.

Teacher Michael Elvin said: "There was a lot of teamwork needed to complete the project successfully. Many of the students used skills they had learnt on their vocational college courses to good effect. The group had to cut timber, make a framework, dig foundations; mix concrete and fix the framework.

"As the photographs show, the walkway not only looked fantastic, but was built to a very high standard."

The female students in the AoPE group, worked in the greenhouses. Their part of the project involved taking seedlings and planting them into pots. They did this with plants, vegetables and fruit.

Nikki Glazebrook, of Groundwork North Northants - the charity that runs the GreenPatch, said: "The students have done a fantastic job within the time limits they were set. I hope we see more students from Kettering Science Academy working here in the future".
