Six imaginative students will have their work published in a book displayed in the British Library after impressing judges in a short-story writing competition.

The English department invited students in years 7, 8 and 9 to take part in the Young Writers’ A Twist in the Tale mini saga challenge. They were challenged with putting a twist on a classic tale in just 100 words. Work was selected for the special anthology based on imagination, perception, expression and creative use of language.

Pranav Sudheesh, Genevieve Maxwell, Sam Blackman, Saffron South, Charles Wilson and Jake Williams all rose to the challenge and will now have their work published in A Twist In The Tale – Tales From The East Midlands.

Genevieve said her piece of work – Snow White and the Demon Dwarves – was inspired by her studies of gothic fiction during lessons this term. She said: “I wanted to put a twist on a classic so in my piece, the dwarves tried to carry out what the Queen had planned for Snow White, but Prince Charming rescued her at the end.”

Each student was presented with a Principal’s Pen by Mr Davies as a reward for their efforts.

As a result of the enthusiasm for the challenge, an after-school creative writing club has been established and now meets every Friday.
