This month at KSA we have launched our first ever ‘Careers Term’. During the course of term there will be a key focus on teaching students about the range of jobs available within different industries.

Each week there the focus will be on a different department who will plan a series of events for every student, from Years 7-13, to get involved in. At the beginning of lessons students will learn about careers related to the subject, the qualifications needed and the pathways they can take.

Guest speakers will also feature heavily throughout the term. Already, Steve Jackson a sports journalist who works for Sky has visited the Academy and Chair of the Governors Steve Barton has spoken to students about apprenticeship opportunities.

‘Careers Term’ will conclude with a careers fair at the Academy on 8th February. The event will be accessible to all students and will feature over 20 companies including solicitors, the armed forces, the emergency service, vets, engineers and a range of universities and colleges.  A selection of talks will also be available for students to attend throughout the day.

Vice Principal Kirsty Farrar said: ‘At Kettering Science Academy we strive to be the best we can be. We are committed to ensuring our students are prepared for the future and make the right choses for them. Having a career, university, college or apprenticeship goal can also help motivate students in the run up to their exams as they know they are working towards something.

‘The feedback we have received from students so far has been incredibly positive. The students have told me that they’ve found the event informative and now have a better understanding of the jobs available in specific fields. They have said they now know the types of grades needed and the pathways they need to take for specific jobs.

‘We are using the ‘Careers Term’ as a way of preparing students for the careers fair. We are able to teach the students about the different careers available but what better way to find out about a job than talking first hand to someone who works in that industry. We have made sure that a wide variety of jobs are represented at the careers fairs to ensure there is something for everyone. We want to make sure our students feel prepared for their next steps whatever they may be.’

If you feel you could offer an insight into a career and would like to take part in our careers fair or lead an assembly, then we’d love to hear from you. Please contact our Careers Department: careers@ketteringscienceacademy.org
