Head of Performing Arts, Miss Julia Mallard receives accreditation as a Specialist Leader in Education in Performing Arts, Drama and Assessment.

Julia said ‘I have just completed my training which allows me to go into other schools across the Trust and country to work with teachers and faculties to create good practice and improve outcomes for their students.’

Julia decided to complete the award after the Academy took on a PGCE student last year. The award will make her one of approximately 3,000 SLE teachers in the country with the nationally recognised Teaching School accreditation.

She said ‘I realised how much I wanted to be the person to work with teachers and train them. I love developing ways to improve teaching and learning across the school. I do a lot of unofficial work outside of school on social media and forums trying to develop practice and sharing schemes of work with other teachers. Essential trying to give the best to our students.

‘Last year I had the opportunity to work with the university and Brooke Weston Academy.
This is when I heard more about the Teaching School and knew I wanted to get involved, so I got in touch with them.’

In order to complete the accreditation, Julia had to fill out a ten-page application form detailing the work she does with individual school students, her impact and how she would go about improving an area of development for a particular school or faculty. She then had to complete a panel presentation and training day at the Teaching School.

She said ‘The award means that I can facilitate at the teaching school and teach on the courses. It is great because it is organised by negotiation to fit around my schedule. My pupils are the most important thing and being their teacher is still priority.

‘I’m glad that I have completed the accreditation as it is exactly what I want to do. I think it is so important to develop teachers that want to do a good job and want the best for our students. I love working with people who are as enthusiastic about teaching as I am. In terms of my career, I hope one day to possibly move into something like the teaching school or teach at university.’
