YA authors Sarah Crossan and Brian Conaghan spoke to over 350 students at Corby Business Academy, Kettering Science Academy and Wrenn Academy about their joint book We Come Apart.

Brian won this year’s Costa Children’s Book Award and Sarah won last year’s Carnegie Medal.

Their book follows two teenagers, a Romanian immigrant and a troubled British girl. The two meet through community service and form an unlikely friendship.

The authors spoke about what its like to collaborate on a book, the inspiration behind the characters and free verse poetry.

Brian said ‘ I don’t think I read a book till I was 16 years old, the font and the size of the books scared me. I started to read poetry and this is how I found my love for reading.

‘The fact our book is written in free verse poetry makes the text less daunting to the reader and they are able to break it down into easier to read sections.’

Sarah said ‘Myself and Brian used to be teachers so we understand the issues that affect young adults and this helps us when writing our books.

‘We Come Apart looks at friendship, family and bullying.’

At the end of the talk students had the opportunity to ask the authors questions and were able purchase copies of book and get them signed.
