Year 10 student, Bernard Dec, received an exceptional opportunity to attend a Physics Experience Week at the University of Birmingham.

Bernard was one of only 24 students to secure a place. He wrote a letter of application, which was supported by a reference from his physics teacher Mrs Louise Oliver, who encouraged him to apply.

The event for gifted Year 10 and 11 students gave them a taste of lectures, practical work, research and other learning activities at degree level.

Bernard said ‘It was a great opportunity and gave me a real insight into what university life is like as well as the advanced topics I could study. I found the lectures on quantum physics particularly interesting.

‘The experience has confirmed that I want to study physics at A level and I am now consider a degree in the subject.’
