Students Research Religious Conflict

Students have been studying the history of conflict in places such as Israel and Palestine as part of their Ethics and Morality programme in CAPS lessons.

Students have been studying the history of conflict in places such as Israel and Palestine as part of their Ethics and Morality programme in CAPS lessons.

History teacher James Leigh designed the scheme of work to give students a greater understanding of other cultures and religions and to explore the idea of modern-day citizenship.

He said: "I wanted students to look at the themes of culture and religion in a modern context. Given the conflicts going on in parts of the world right now, it's worth students understanding the history of those tensions and the religious dimension."

Form groups have been researching different parts of the world and are compiling news reports and fact files based on what they have learnt. They are looking in particular at the lives of children in these areas and how it affects them. Students will also look at the treatment of Muslims in the wake of 9/11.

Mr Leigh said: "We want students to understand that it's unfair to tarnish whole cultures because of the actions of radicals.

"It's also about teaching students about the cultures around different religions and the idea of citizenship and living in a modern world."
