Poetry Workshop

Year 7 students took part in a poetry workshop held in KSA’s library last week with the Academy’s very own poet, Miss Stevie Townsend.
The workshop took place in CAPS time and looked at this year’s National Poetry Day’s theme of ‘Remember’.
First of all the students were challenged to a memory game of  recalling  15 items placed on a tray after studying them for two minutes.
Cassandra Avery, was the only student, who after the tray was taken away,  could remember and write down all the items that were on the tray correctly.
Afterwards, Miss Townsend spoke about how she starts to write a poem and she shared her own poem based on ‘Remember’. (Click on the link below to read Miss Townsend’s Poem)
Miss Townsend, who is also an ICT Teacher at KSA, said: “My poem about remembering came about as I not very good at remembering names but I am better at remembering people’s faces.”
Then the students were encouraged to think of their own compositions themed around the word ‘remember’.
Librarian, Heidi Economou, encouraged the students to think of different approaches to writing their poems based on the theme.
Mrs Economou said: “Think about remembering maybe an event or a holiday or a special occasion or moment in your life. It could be a poem about remembering how you remember to do things or it could be about remembering someone special.”
The poems produced by the students varied from remembering old friendships to remembering a person who had passed away.
At the end of the workshop the students were  invited  to take part in a regular poetry club at the Academy once a month in CAPS time to help develop their literacy and creative writing skills.
