The first heat for finding the top bakers to represent Kettering Science Academy in this year’s Great Brooke Weston Trust Bake Off  have been held and the competition standards are high.
Last Thursday, 16th April, twelve bakers from KSA competed in the first round of the Academy’s Bake Off competition and created their own cookies or shortbread biscuits.
The group of students from Years 7,  8, 9 and 10 took part in the Bake Off heat after school under competition conditions and were observed by three judges from KSA, Teaching Assistant, Miss Sheila Law , Catering Manager, Mr Alan Sewell and Food and Catering Teacher, Mr Simon Isaacs.
The young cooks were individually set the task to bake biscuits of their choice during the competition session and at the end were asked to present six of their best prepared cookies to the judges.
The contestants gained marks for hygiene, presentation and the taste of their finished biscuits.
Students chose to create a very varied spread of biscuits including: Lavender flavoured shortbread, Raspberry and white chocolate cookies and cream and jam filled shortbread sandwiches.
All the students scored highly for their creations and the judges commented on the high standards set by the bakers, who will now take part in another six rounds before a knock out stage, when 12 bakers will become a team of four to take part in the Brooke Weston Trust inter-schools competition in July.

Mr Isaacs said: “The competition is very fierce, and students are being very secretive which each other about what they are making until the minute they enter the room.  The judges finished the day impressed with the range of different products and skills shown, and feeling very full from the delicious cookies and biscuits!  The competition has started with a bang!”
This Thursday, the Bake Off hopefuls will be tested on their abilities to make sweet or savoury scones.

Year 7 students taking part are: Aishmeen Manesk,  Cassandra Avery, Stephanie James, Holly Mortimore, and Emo Chinbuah.
Year 8 student is: James Moss.
Year 9 students: Chloe Whysall, Charlotte Stirling, Ellie-Mae Wardle and Joshua Pegler
Year 10 students: Sophie Moss and Teresa Perez.
