A Date With A Book

Year 7 students at KSA have been familiarising themselves with books in the Academy’s library in a speed dating style event.
The speed dating with the new books is taking place as part of the students’ transition into the Academy during their English lessons and the Year 7s are spending a just a few minutes with each of the latest novels in the library.
The students get to read short extracts from the books before a buzzer sounds and they are asked to move onto the next book.
They are then asked to write down their thoughts on each book and decide on their favourite book, one they might like to get to read more of in the future.
Head Librarian at the Secondary Phase, Mrs Heidi Economou said: “It is a great fun exercise for the students as part of their transition into the school. We look at all their preferred choices of books and then we hope to reunite them with their favourite book before the Christmas break.”
She added: “It is also a good taster exercise as it introduces them to new books to consider reading in the future.”
The books being looked are: Flirty Dancing by Jenny McLachlan, The Pale by Chris Wooding, Cuckoo Song by Frances Hardinge, Jinx – The Wizard’s Apprentice by Sage Blackwood, Sons of Scarlatti –Infinity Drake by John McNally, Astronaut's Handbook by Louie Stowell, The Children of the King by Sonya Hartnett, Dandelion Clocks by Rebecca Westcott, The Last Wild by Piers Torday, What We are Fighting For? by Brian Moses and Roger Stevens, Doctor Proctor's Fart Powder by Jo Nesbo and The Tornado Chasers by Ross Montgomery.
The exercise is part of the Bookbuzz reading programme from the Booktrust, which supports schools to encourage reading for pleasure, independent choice and develop a whole school reading culture. For more information visit www.bookbuzz.org.uk
