This week, TARGET (Targeting and Reducing Exploitation and Trading of Children and Young People Online) visited the Academy to talk to all Year 7 students about being safe whilst online.

At the beginning of the session the students were shown some statistics of people who talk to stranger on online and people who meet up with a strangers. The students then looked at different social media applications and their privacy setting before discussing what counts as ‘personal information’.

To end the session the students listened to some real life stories to help make them more aware of what could end up happening from what seems like an innocent conversations with a stranger online.

A representative from Target said ‘ I’m not here to tell you all to delete your social media accounts but I am trying to make you more aware and alert. If I can encourage some of you go home and change your privacy settings and not add a stranger online then great.’

Target is a project funded by the Big Lottery and aims to challenge the many and increasing dangers to children and young people online in Northamptonshire and Leicestershire by increasing their awareness of online protective behaviour.
