Parents Invited To Join Reading Challenge

KSA is one of the first schools in the country to launch the Six Book Challenge to encourage more parents to take up reading.

The idea of the scheme, which is run by the Reading Agency, is that parents take on the challenge to read six books between January and June 30th, with access to the books in the Academy's library.

The aim is to encourage less confident readers and support those who are getting into reading for the first time.

In turn, parents will then have more confidence helping their children to read at home.

The Academy is calling on parents to make a New Year's resolution to discover the joys and benefits of reading.

In addition, the scheme is open to the wider community, with members of the public also invited to access the Academy's library and take up the challenge.

Participants record their reading in a diary and once they complete their six books, they are entered in a national and Academy prize draw.

Librarian Juliet Walsh and Assistant Librarian Kathryn Webb will be on hand to offer tips and support to parents who take part in the challenge.

Mrs Walsh said: "The idea is that parents can then help their children with their reading at home and can encourage them to read more.

"It could also help those parents for who English is their second language.

"We have a variety of books on offer - fiction and fact - and the library is open all day and during the holidays.

"Taking part in the challenge will be a fun way to read and we're here to help parents select the right books for them."

The Six Book Challenge is in addition to initiatives already in place at the Academy to help develop pupils' love of reading, including an after-school reading club, author visits, book fairs, Carnegie Medal shadowing, competitions and the celebration of events like Poetry Day.

Members of the public who are interested in taking up the Six Book Challenge should contact Mrs Walsh by calling 01536 532700 or by dropping in to see the Librarians.
