Housing Estate Concepts Designed by Year 9s
A panel of experts visited KSA to judge housing estate designs that were produced as part of ICU days.
Year 9s were challenged to come up with their own housing developments through the work-related learning project.
After researching the house-building process, students looked at costings and how much they would have to sell their houses for to make a profit.
They had to consider who the houses would be aimed at, how their target audience would affect the design and how their development could be marketed.
Extra challenges had to be overcome, including a disused gravel pit on the site earmarked for building.
The project was organised by Northamptonshire Education and Work Service and the visiting judges included GSS Architecture, Berrys Valuers and Surveyors and Willmott Dixon.
After speaking to students and considering each design, they awarded first place to 'Privilege Village' (pictured).
Student Daisy Helsdown was part of the group 'D&C', which came third. She said: "I enjoyed the marketing side because it's not something you'd normally do in lessons. I thought the activity would include things like maths, English and design but wasn't expecting to be looking at things like marketing.
"It makes it more realistic because if you were really building houses, you would have to think about things like advertising.
"It's good to work as a team and we all came forward to take on the different jobs."
Simon Smith, who owns a buidling company, spoke to the year group about the importance of gaining maths qualifications while an architect praised the groups for their unique plans and encouraged them to think about a career in the design industry, be it houses, cars, furniture or interiors.
