New Learning Experiences Ahead

The curriculum will be suspended for 12 days this year when students take part in cross-subject activities designed to inspire and challenge them.

The new Integrated Curriculum Programme (ICU) will see students working in their year groups on themed projects, drawing on skills rooted in a variety of curriculum subjects.

One activity is a two-day Murder Mystery challenge for Year 7, which will allow students to see how forensic science is applied, as well as developing their literacy skills.

Year 8 will be applying their knowledge of languages, business and PE when they stage a mini Olympics event.

The whole Academy will be off the timetable for each event and each year group will take part in a different activity, with the first starting on November 16th.

The innovative programme, which is a first for KSA, will help to broaden students' outlook and allow them to transfer skills from one department to another.

Vice Principal Tanya Harvey, who is co-ordinating the ICU programme, said: "It's about giving all children access to a range of activities and increasing their opportunities to experience new things, new places and to work with different people, and to give them learning experiences outside the classroom.

"We want to make them more aware of the world around them and equip them with skills that will be useful outside the Academy."

Sixth Formers will also be a big part of the activities as they will eventually become ICU ambassadors, helping to run different events.

Other activities in the pipeline include a week of cultural experiences, enterprise days and a survival-themed project.

It follows on from a series of successful activity days, such as the Dragons' Den-style competition (pictured), which helped bring to life what is learnt in the classroom.
