Admissions & Appeals

This page explains the application process for school places at the Academy, including Year 7 through to Year 11, students with an Education, Health and Care Plan, and for the Sixth Form. This is based on the Brooke Weston Trust Admissions Policy which can be found here.

Application for school place in Year 7 in September 2024

All applications for a place at the Academy must be made through the Local Authority using the Common Preference Form. This can be accessed through this link– applications can be made online or by paper. Please note that you will be required to submit three preferences. Applicants cannot be guaranteed that they will be offered one of their preferences.

If the application is unsuccessful, parents/carers will be informed as to how to submit an appeal.

In Year Applications (for a school place in Year 7 (after 31st December of year of entry) to Year 11)

All applications for a place at the Academy must be made through the Local Authority using the Common Preference Form. This can be accessed through this link – applications can be made online. Please note that you will be required to submit three preferences. Applicants cannot be guaranteed that they will be offered one of their preferences.

The Academy will consider all applications for places. Where the number of applications exceeds the number of places available, the above over subscription criteria will be applied. The outcome of each application will be communicated to the parent/carer within the specified timescales. If the application is unsuccessful, parents/carers will be informed as to how to submit an appeal.

In Year Waiting List

The Academy operates a waiting list for Year 7 – Year 11 places. This is held by the Local Authority. If a place is available, then it will be filled by a place on the waiting list subject to the conditions set out in the over subscription criteria. Parents/carers must notify the Local Authority if they wish their child to be on the waiting list. Parents/carers must reconfirm they wish their child to remain on the waiting list within one week of the start of each new academic term. Failure to do so may result in removal from the waiting list.

Admission arrangements for children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND)

If your child has an education, health and care (EHC) plan or a statement of special educational needs (SEN) there is a separate process for your child's school admission. Further details on how to apply can be found  here.

Application for a Sixth Form place

The Academy will consider all applications into our Sixth Form. The entry requirements for all students are as follows:

5 grade 5s or above with some subject specific requirements

There are a total of 100 places available in Year 12. If applications exceed these numbers over subscription criteria will apply.

  1. SEN students who meet the academic criteria, whose statement names the school as the most appropriate provision and where the school can meet need
  2. Children in public care, including children who have previously been in public care but ceased to be so because they were adopted or became subject to a residence order or special guardianship order.
  3. Children with a sibling**, see additional information, at the Academy at the time of transfer to the Sixth Form and who meet the Sixth Form entry requirement.
  4. Distance between permanent address***, see additional information, and the Academy as measured in a straight line from the child’s home to the Main Entrance of the Academy site (Proof of residence may be requested ****, see additional information)

In the event of a tie-break situation i.e. two addresses are exactly the same distance from the Academy; a place will be awarded on a random allocation basis.

There will be a right of appeal to an Independent Appeals Panel for unsuccessful Post 16 applicants.

Waiting list

The Academy operates a waiting list for Year 12 entry for the first academic year of admission. If a place is available in Year 12 then it will be filled by a place on the waiting list subject to the conditions set out in the policy for entry to Year 12. Parents/carers must notify the Academy if they wish their child to be on the waiting list.

**Definition of sibling link:

  • A brother or sister sharing the same parents
  • A half-brother or half-sister, where two children share one common parent
  • A step-brother or step-sister, where two children are related by a parent’s marriage or partnership.  The partners must have co-habited in a permanent exclusive relationship (as if they were husband and wife or civil partners) for a minimum of 3 years;
  • Adopted children

A brother or sister must be living at the SAME address when the application is made.

***Permanent Address

The place of residence where the student sleeps the majority of the time.

****Proof of Residence:

Documentary evidence of ownership or rental agreement may be required together with proof of actual permanent residence at the property concerned.  Places cannot be allocated on the basis of intended future changes of address unless house moves have been confirmed through the exchange of contracts or the signing of a formal lease agreement.  The Academy reserves the right to seek further documentary evidence to support your claim to residence.  The Academy will withdraw any place allocated if the address is found to be false

Appeals Information

Parents/carers have the right to appeal an admission decision by the Academy. All appeals are heard by the Independent Appeals Panel in accordance with the School Admissions Code (2021). Please see below link to our FAQs for further information.

Appeals lodged by the deadline will be heard by this date. Please note we have allowed a 7-day window to conduct all appeals for schools.

The School Admissions Code (‘the Code’) has been issued under Section 84 of the School Standards and Framework Act 1998 (‘SSFA 1998’)1. The Code has been made following a consultation under Section 85(2) of the SSFA 1998 and after being laid before Parliament for forty days.

The purpose of this Code is to ensure that all school places for maintained schools and Academies (excluding maintained special schools and special academies6) are allocated and offered in an open and fair way.
