Key Stage 3 Overview:

Key Stage 3 Music at KSA gives students the opportunity to perform, compose and create music. Students are actively encouraged to use good communication skills and work as a group. Year 7 acts as a stepping-stone to Years 8, 9, 10 and 11. Year 7 focuses particular on developing and nurturing music through patterns; performing together; musical arrangements and musical clichés. Year 8 and 9 builds up a breadth in understanding music within different cultures and ways of communicating through Music. In year 8 students look at broadening their knowledge in music by looking at how different cultures perceive music and how music is a key aspect of life. They focus on African Drum music, Indian Classical music all the way through to Western Musicals. Year 9 builds on the knowledge and breadth from year 7 and 8 and looks at music composition and performing in more detail from GCSE music to a Pop song composition. Term 3 and 4 in year 9 gives students a clear insight to what music will look like at Key Stage 4, including both units that could prepare students for the study of GCSE and BTEC at Key Stage 4. Term 5 and 6 offers students the opportunity to develop an awareness of Film Music and Pop Song Composition.

Key Stage 4 Overview - (BTEC Music):

At Key Stage 4, Music becomes an option for students to study. There are two pathways for students to take which are, GCSE Music and BTEC Music. Only BTEC Music is currently being offered, GCSE Music will be an option for 2018-19 KS4 students.

BTEC Music – Student will study 4 modules over the 2 years, one of which is an exam at the end of year 11.

BTEC Music gives students the skills to progress to KS5 Music BTEC or any other vocational course. It gives students the required skills to succeed in the music industry from Performance, Recording and Managing a product.

Unit 1 – Music industry – Exam paper which is about the music industry and how the industry works.

Unit 2 – Managing a Music product – Students actively take the role of a music production team and have to manage a school performance from arranging the venue, to the performance acts, tickets and much more. This gives students the opportunity to build on management skills and understand how a music production team works. They are required to create a portfolio of evidence, documenting not only every meeting they attend, but their process throughout the unit of work.

Unit 5 – Introducing Music Performance – Students will develop performance skills in practice and performance, through solo and ensemble performances. Students will work on solo performance skills and they can develop individually as well as what they can do to work in groups. Students are required to create a logbook and track their progress over time. Students will then perform in groups, at a school performance, which will be in front of a live audience.

Unit 6 – Introduction to Music Recording – Students will take the role of a studio engineer and will develop understanding of Music Recording, from setting up a studio, to how to create a mix down and a full band recording. Students will develop practical skills of how a studio works and what the requirements are for a good recording engineer. Students will be required to work as a recording team to set up, record and mix a full band. The evidence students must generate is a portfolio.
