SEND and Disadvantaged

Targeted support for SEN and Disadvantaged pupils

Disadvantaged: The school's careers lead uses data to identify pupils who are in need of targeted support or who are at risk of not participating in further studies after year 11, becoming NEET (not in education, employment or training). Targeted pupils receive additional in-school support on career options, pathways (Apprenticeships, College etc.) and application help. Pupils in alternative provision receive targeted support from the careers lead and additional support with interviews etc., from the Alternative Provision co-ordinator.

The Assistant Principals and Raising Standards leads for progress and outcomes, along with our careers lead Julie Thompson, work closely to ensure Disadvantaged pupils receive carefully targeted advice and access to other career related programmes such as university visits, apprenticeship information and college visits. A range of aspirational visits and employer encounters are arranged throughout the year where Disadvantaged students are targeted to attend, many of which have been funded by Aspire Higher.

SEND: All school staff work from the basis that the majority of SEND pupils are capable of sustainable paid employment, with the right preparation and support. By working closely with the careers lead, SENDCO, SEND pupils are supported to develop the skills and experience, and achieve the qualifications they need, to succeed in their careers. The school seeks to understand the interests, strengths and motivations of pupils and use this to support pupils onto a pathway that supports their development and progression. A carefully selected Modified Curriculum has been put in place for some of our SEND students alongside The Princes Trust Programme to ensure our SEND students are building the necessary skills needed for when they leave the Academy, such as CV building, personal statements and mock interviews.

Independent and impartial advice for young people with SEN and disabilities includes all the education, training and employment opportunities on offer, and signpost them onto study programmes that will support their transition into paid employment. This includes work skills programmes, work experience, apprenticeships and qualifications that will enable pupils to apply for higher education where appropriate. Kudos, which is an online platform for Careers Guidance is used by our SEN students due to the accessibility features particularly students with Dyslexia and visual and hearing impairment. This applies to all of our students including students at Alternative Provision.

Pupils can arrange a meeting with our careers lead Mrs Thompson by contacting her on the following email address julie.thompson@ketteringscienceacademy.org
