Today is World Diabetes day and to celebrate we have been lucky enough to have specials guests Michael Pierides, a doctor from Kettering General Hospital and Bob Geodbloed, a professional cyclist with type 1 diabetes, come into school.

This morning Bob cycled to Kettering Science Academy before giving an assembly to Year 10 and 11 students to promote that having diabetes is not a barrier to achieving great things.

He said ‘when my doctor diagnosed me with diabetes, he told me that it would affect my whole life and that I would no longer be able to participate in sports.

‘Whilst I was on google trying to find out more information about diabetes, I came across Team Novo Nordisk. The whole cycle team have type 1 diabetes.

‘I have realised that whilst I have to be more aware of things and be careful what I eat, I can still do everything if I set my mind to it.’

Michael said ‘ We as doctors need to make sure we are offering patients the support they need and show them that they can still live a normally active life.’

The speech was the first part of a series of events Bob and Michael are holding today in partnership with Kettering General Hospital and Northamptonshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust to help raise awareness around diabetes. Tonight they will be at Kettering General Hospital’s Diabetes Centre having an open forum for anyone of any age looking to find out more information.
