Tomorrow, The Great Brooke Weston Trust Bake Off launches at KSA to find the Academy’s top bakers.

The Key Stage 3 students will take part in weekly baking challenges after school where they will be tasked with making biscuits, cupcakes, tray bakes and savoury pasties. Each week we will see a number of students eliminated and one will be crowned star baker.

At the end of the six weeks, the top three bakers from the Academy will go forward to take part in the finale in June, where they will compete again the best bakers for the other Trust Schools.

DT teacher Ms Wills said: ‘We have received an amazing response from the students. A total of 44 students signed up so we had to whittle them down to just 24.

‘The competition is a great way to brings students from the Trust schools together and showcases their talents in design technology. Food is a subject that students generally enjoy and this allows them to be involved in another extra-curricular activity based on the subject.

‘The competition will allow the students to develop many core skills and will ultimately build their confidence. They have to be organised and independent in the kitchen and their patients and time keeping will be tested throughout.

‘I think Food is such an important subject to make the students aware of the food they eat. In lessons we teach students to be healthy, to understand where different foods come from and teach them the science behind food and baking. Being able to cook is something the students will use for the rest of their life and this competition will allow the students to develop these skills in an enjoyable way.

‘I am really excited for the students taking part and want them to have fun and relish the experience.

‘At the Academy everyone is really getting behind the students involved and I am really keen to make it an Academy wide topic of discussion. Each week I will ensure everyone knows what the baking challenge is and who the star baker is each week. We are vying for a top spot in the final and will hopefully bring back this year’s trophy!’
