National Poetry Day celebrations

The English Department and Library organised a range of activities in celebration of National Poetry Day to promote the power of poetry, inspiring students and staff to enjoy, discover and share poetry. This year's theme was 'change' and key Stage 3 students wrote Haiku’s – creating poems from banks of words and produced some beautiful examples of black out poetry.

The English Department and Library organised a range of activities in celebration of National Poetry Day to promote the power of poetry, inspiring students and staff to enjoy, discover and share poetry. This year's theme was change and Key Stage 3 students wrote Haiku’s – creating poems from banks of words and produced some beautiful examples of black out poetry.

Inspiring, funny, thought-provoking poems nominated by staff covered the walls of the English wing for students to read.

Staff haven’t missed out on the fun either and have been sent poems throughout the day.

Head of English Miss Evans said: There was a brilliant atmosphere in the Academy and both staff and students got fully got involved in the day.

‘There was much debate amongst pupils about what constitutes “a poem” when they realised that some of the nominated “poems” were lyrics from songs they recognised.  The English Department agree with Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s definition of a poem, which is simply “the best words in the best order.”
