Silver Duke Of Edinburgh Award For Dedicated Student

A Sixth Former spent six months volunteering as part of his Duke of Edinburgh challenges.

Cameron Lindley, who is in Year 12, had to complete six months' service, six months of developing a skill and three months of physical recreation to earn the silver award.

For the service part, he volunteered at Fermyn Woods at Rockingham Forest where he carried out conservation work, fixed paving slabs, picked litter and lopped bushes.

For the skills category, Cameron developed his knowledge of gardening and converted an area of waste land to encourage in wildlife and birds.

As part of the award, Cameron also learned street dance and took part in a hiking expedition in Buxton, Derbyshire, with other young people from Kettering.

He had to carry his kit and tent with him and cook his own meals as part of the camp.

Cameron said: "Doing something like that helped my teamwork skills because I didn't know any of the others until I turned up on the day to start the walk.

"It's also helped my confidence because you never work with the same group twice. The best bit was the expedition - it was challenging but fun."

Cameron has now got his sights set on the Duke of Edinburgh gold award.
