Students Claim Victory In County Wide Technology Event

Academy students have won the Rotary Technology Challenge cup – beating 50 other teams to lift the title.

The team from Year 10 used all of their design and technology skills to come up with the innovative design to claim first prize.

The event was staged at Weston Favell School on 7th March and featured 16  schools from across the county.

KSA entered three Year 7 and Year 9 teams and the victorious Year 10 team, which was made up of Ania Straus, Todd Panton, Boniface Kangethe and Jamie Docherty.

The teams were given a brief at the start of the day to make a construction which needed to have an advertisement for a charity on it plus a light on the top that had to flash at least 10 times. Throughout the day the teams were judged on various elements only known to the judges.

Work Related Learning and Enterprise Coordinator Jenny Brackwell said: " All our teams found the challenge difficult and all came to a stage when things were not working and the light bulbs would not flash but eventually all overcame their difficulties."

The Year 10 team excelled and came first in their section beating Bishop Stopford School into second place.  To mark their achievement the team received a cup to keep and a £25 gift voucher each.

Boniface said: "It was great to win, especially as with just minutes to go we did not have a solution to the problem."

Mrs Brackwell said: "This was a tremendous result by our students as this is the first time the school has entered the competition and we did not know what to expect.

"All students including the two Year 11 students Mary Beth Douglas and Jake Keidel who took part in the journalist project and reported on the event were a credit to the school."

For taking part in the event each student will be given a CREST award that recognises their creativity in either science or technology.

Event organiser, Charles Afford said: "There were some genius ideas and I was impressed because even I wondered how they were going to tackle the problem"
