Students from Year 9 who are part of the successful Buddies programme were awarded with certificates and thanked by senior staff for the example they have shown to younger students and the time they have given to help others.

The group of more than 25 students have supported Year 7 students in the transition stage and have also acted as Academy ambassadors - helping out at events such as open days.

Ivona Avidegbe, who has chosen to study Child Development next year said she has enjoyed the experience.

She said: "I really appreciate being a Buddy as I really enjoy working with and helping younger children.

"It is definitely something I want to pursue as a career."

The certificates were handed out by Principal Martin Campbell, who told the group: "I think all of you have done, and I am sure will continue to do, a great job.

"As you move into Year 10 from September and we introduce the Vertical Tutoring system, you will have to use this experience to help the Year 7s who will be in your form."

Inclusion Manager and Mentoring Coordinator Katie Trevor have led the scheme with the help of the Mentoring and Befriending Foundation.

The celebration was to recognise the achievement of reaching the National Standard award for mentoring.

Katie Trevor said: "I am extremely proud of these Year 9 students. Over the summer holiday they started back three days early to help the new Year 7s settle in."

As part of the Buddies system Year 12 and 13 students have been providing academic assistance to younger students by spending one to one time helping with their studies.

Next year the Buddies system will coordinate with the Heroes Programme, which was introduced in September. The Heroes programme has involved students from across all years and included a series of workshops looking at issues such as self esteem and aspiration.
