Art and Design embody some of the highest forms of human creativity. We aim to engage, inspire and challenge students, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. They will explore how art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our society. Students learn to think and act as artists and designers, working innovatively and intelligently. Creative skills are valued and actively sought across a wide range of employment sectors, as employers are looking to recruit employees who are adaptable and can generate fresh ideas.

Aims:

Art and Design aims to ensure that all pupils:

• Develop the use of visual language by seeing, understanding, questioning and practising.
• Explore the unique qualities of different materials and processes to inform ideas.
• Make connections between great artists, art movements and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.
• Become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques.
• Develop skills in analysing and expressing opinions using artistic terminology and vocabulary.
• Can identify curriculum links with History, English Literature, Mathematics, Geography and Design Technology.

Implementation:

KS3

Students will explore a range of starting points exploring the work of others to enhance their understanding of the application of materials and the communication of ideas using visual language.

All year groups will study the following disciplines and develop skills in;

• Drawing
• Painting
• Printmaking
• 3D Form
• Photography
• Artist analysis
• Refining ideas.

KS4

Students can study a GCSE in an Art and Design discipline;

• Fine Art
• Photography
• Textile Design
• Graphic Communication

Students will continue to develop their ability to;

• Generate and refine ideas through visual research
• Explore the work of artists, art movements and designers and extend their cultural knowledge.
• Experiment with a range of materials.
• Develop their investigative, analytical, experimental and interpretative capabilities.
• Develop critical and enquiring minds, with increasing independence.
• Improve personal attributes including self-confidence, resilience, perseverance, self-discipline and commitment.
