Yesterday St Mary's CEVA Primary School welcomed KSA’s Sixth Form Science Committee, and science teachers Louise Oliver and Paul Foster, to their British Science Week demonstration day.
The primary school children rotated round different rooms to experience a variety of experiments put on by their teachers. The Science Committee supported the event by providing activities based on the theme 'Microscopes and the Miniature World'.
The children used microscopes to view and compare samples of different animal hairs and prepared their own slides of onion cells. They used bio-viewers to study human tissues, such as blood cells and parts of the digestive system. They also set up choice chamber experiments to see which conditions, such as dark/light and damp/dry, the maggots preferred. For most students this was their first chance to use microscopes to view objects in such detail and they were also fascinated by the maggot’s behaviour.
Steven Middleton, Lead Science Teacher at St Mary's, said, ‘This was a really successful day and it was great to see our students getting so involved in all the activities. It was also a fabulous opportunity for the Sixth Committee, who worked with the children to share their knowledge and expertise. We hope to continue working with KSA to give our students more experience of science practical work in the future.’
