KSA have just finished celebrating their annual Book Week. For the occasion, the Academy held many events including a visit from a guest author (Andy Briggs) and lyrical poet (Richard Grant).
Andy is a screenwriter and graphic novelist best known for his books HERO.COM and VILLIAN.NET. He spoke to over 600 students about his work and what it is like to have a career as a writer, getting to travel round the world for research and being a part of successful films such as ‘Foreverman’. Students then had the opportunity to meet and greet the author and get their books signed.
During the week students also received a visit from lyrical poet, Richard Grant aka the Dreadlock Alien. Richard ran a variety of workshops throughout the day with students, telling them all about himself and his art. He encouraged students to use rhyme through an interactive poetry slam. Sixth Form students learnt about how he uses social media to market himself as well as the challenges of the site. In the afternoon Year 7 students took part in a workshop aimed at building the confidence of reluctant readers in which he spoke about the importance of education and the written word.
Head Librarian Mrs Heidi Economou said ‘He is such an interactive guest and the children all get involved in his workshops. It has been a brilliant week celebrating reading and learning about writing careers.’
