Drama students recently completed the practical element of their AS and A Level exams. Family, Friends and Staff were invited to watch the two performances by Year 12 and 13 students.

Year 13 students devised a 30-minute performance from a range of different stimulus. This year they were given the song and video 'Are You Lost in the World Like Me' by Moby, a video of a drone flying over the devastated city of Chernobyl and a self help book advising them on 'How to Hold Difficult Conversations'. Students then explored them through many workshops using different styles and techniques.

Their final piece 'Devices' focused on the use of mobile technology, social media and questioned if technology had really helped. It was a balanced argument presented in contrasting abstract and naturalistic forms.

Mrs Amanda Doherty said ‘It is at this level students really do become their own practitioner and Megan, Jordan, Gina & Lauson should be extremely proud of themselves, well done.

‘The performances from both Year groups could not have been more different.’

Year 12 students had to explore a key extract from a chosen text. This year they looked at a traditional text called 'The House of Bernarda Alba' by Federico garcía Lorca; a gritty tale of a Spanish house in mourning after the death of Bernarda's second husband. Lorca explored prevailing themes of repression, sexuality, and tyranny. Their key extract focused on the climatic end scene as Adela struggles with the confinement of the house and her love for Pepe el Romano. The family name is sacred and standards must be adhered to.

The students worked with Theatre Complicite as their given practitioner and turned a traditional text in to a physical and visual spectacle.

Mrs Doherty said ‘I really can't praise the Year 12 girls enough for their hard work and commitment, each and every one of them has come so far since the start of the year and they should be extremely proud of themselves. Well done Jade, Laura, Gemma and Julia.’
