KSA’s Carnegie book club allows children to ‘shadow’ the judging process for the CILIP Book Awards as part of the reading for pleasure initiative.
Since the club started at Easter, the children have been encouraged to read all the books on the shortlist before the winners of the highly prestigious awards are announced in June. The group, run by Mrs Hazelwood, take part in group discussions and activities at their weekly meeting on Monday during CAPS.
This year is the 80th anniversary of the awards. During the last meeting the group looked at the winning books from each year and how the types of books children read have changed over time.
Head Librarian Heidi Economou, who has been involved in running the Carnegie book club for 25 years said ‘Carnegie is great for encouraging students to read books outside of their usual comfort zone and discover a passion for something they weren’t expecting to.
‘I also think its very important to support the awards because Kettering library was one of the first 2,500 fee public libraries that Andrew Carnegie built in the UK, US and Canada. He was committed to extending the quality of opportunity through learning.’
