Students deliver Christmas Hampers to Skylark Ward

This week, a group of Year 8 representatives delivered the Christmas hampers they have been busy making to the Skylark children's ward at Kettering General Hospital.

Each year, students from each year group make up and decorate hampers to give to a local charity and this year, Year 8 students decided to give theirs to the Skylark ward.

Head of Year 8 Mr Feely said ‘ I was so impressed with the students commitment and effort. They were only expected to make one hamper per form group but they blow me away and instead of making just 8 hampers they made a total of 23.

‘This year I had to give a tough assembly to students about the event that happened at a Manchester concert, this is what made our year group decide to give something back to the local hospital. Many of our students have been in the hospital or will be at some stage in their lives so we felt it was really important to give something back.’

Whilst they were delivering their hampers, Claire from the ward gave students a tour. The ward hosts 26 beds and has a variety of rooms and services on offer such as a paediatric ward, a pre-assessment clinic, a treatment room and a sensory room amongst others.

Claire spoke about the different reasons the children may be in hospital and informed students that their busiest time is usually from mid-November till February. She also told the students about the different visitors they have in each week for the patients such as a magician and a therapy dog, which the students were lucky enough to meet on his rounds.

The students said ‘We really wanted to make the students feel more Christmassy whilst being in hospital over the festive period. We want to make them feel as much at home and as normal as possible. We hope our gifts will help put a smile on their faces and make them laugh.’

To end the trip, the students filled in a tag and made a wish to Santa that all the students in the ward will get better.
