A group of students represented the Academy yesterday at the First Lego League Tournament held in the Department of Engineering at Cambridge University.
This is the second time the Academy has entered the competition, which had a ‘water' theme. The team was made up of Key Stage 3 students who called themselves ‘The Kettering Shark Attacks’. They used a EV3 Midstorms Lego robot to complete a number of water based missions to help them earn points. The students adapted their robot for the mission during their after school Lego club, which they attend each week.
In the run up to the competition students also had to research how to solve a water related problem. The students chose to design a water filtration system that would cleanse dirty water and make it drinkable. On the day of the competition the students had to present their project to a panel of made up of employees from Lego, engineering company Qualcomm and Cambridge University.
The students were also judged on the methods they used to design and programme their robot as well as their team ethos and core values.
Miss Louise Oliver, who runs the Lego club said ‘The team were excellent ambassadors for the Academy and received many complements from the judges. The students all thoroughly enjoyed the tournament and have learnt lots. They received goody bags and won medals for their efforts throughout the day. They are now already talking about next year’s competition, which will be called ‘Into Orbit’’.
Well done to all the students involved.
