Academy launches prefect system

The new prefect initiative will allow Key Stage 4 and 5 students to take on more responsibility and play an active role within the Academy.

The new prefect initiative will allow Key Stage 4 and 5 students to take on more responsibility and play an active role within the Academy.

The prefects will be involved in the general day to day running of the school by reminding students of the Academy expectations. They will set an example to the rest of their peers and help out at after-school events such as parents’ evenings and open evenings. Each term there will also be a key focus within the Academy. This term it is to monitor the new keep left system to ensure students are adhering to the new rule, which will make class change overs a smoother process.

Within the team, there are two senior prefects from Year 12, Chloe and Kirstyn, who will take on a leadership role helping to oversee key decisions with Mr Horne who set up the new initiative.

In order to become a prefect, students had to apply for the role by completing an application, which answered two questions ‘What motivates you to want to become a prefect?’ and ‘What skills and experience can you bring to the role of a prefect?’

Mr Horne said ‘We received a large number of applications, which were of a high standard. I decided that only Key Stage 4 and 5 students would be able to apply for the role as they understand what we want to achieve as an Academy. I believe the that students will be able to gain huge amounts from the new role by allowing them to take on more responsibility which in turn I hope will help prepare them for life after school. They will also be able to improve their own skills such as interaction and communication with others.

‘I hope the initiative will develop a new strand of student leadership whilst also ensuring rules are being adhered to, helping to continually ensure the safety of students around the Academy.’

The prefects will stay in post for one academic year allowing others students to have a chance at becoming a prefect. Students who wish to carry on being part of the team the following year will be able to discuss this opportunity at the relevant time.
