Today, over 200 students took part in activities that allowed them to explore careers within the NHS.
The workshops provided students with an opportunity to carry out similar jobs to those healthcare professionals do on a daily basis. Students took part in a the activities in a carousel, allowing them to fill in a sheet which have them an overview of their health. Activites included recording and printing an ECG, looking inside their eyeball, taking part in a simulation of a keyhole surgery, taking blood from a fake arm and taking an ultrasound of their heart.
As well as the activites themselves students were also able to find out more about the range of jobs that exist within the NHS, including the grades they would need and the pathways into them. Students were also able to speak to recent graduates from the professions.
A representative of medical Mavericks said ‘At Medical Mavericks we are opening the door to the world around the students we see, just enough so they can get a tantalising taste that will drive their ambition and inspire them to find out more. We know it only takes one spark, one moment in a student’s school life that will change the rest of their life.’
Ms Ferguson said: ‘The students all really engaged with the workshop and enjoyed the high level of practical activities.
‘The focus is on providing inspirations to raise aspirations and help students make more informed decisions about careers and lifestyles.’
Year 12 student Keegan said: ‘I have found the workshop really fun whilst also providing a real insight into the industry. I am interested in going into a career in sports and taking part in these activities has shown me some of the types of tests I may have to use and how they work.’
