Four students from Years 9 – 11 represented Kettering Science Academy in the county heats Top of the Bench chemistry competition.

The STEM event was held at the University of Northampton in conjunction with the University of Leicester and the Royal Society of Chemists.

The students were given a tour of the brand new University of Northampton Waterside campus, then taken to the university’s Creative Hub to take part in the competition. They were given a quiz booklet of chemistry questions, which they had to answer as a team and visited the university’s laboratories to perform an experiment. The team were also given the opportunity to talk to and ask questions to some of the lecturers and students from UoN  nd found out about university life, their jobs and the qualifications and pathways that they took to get into their careers.

Science Teacher Miss Oliver said: ‘All of the students thoroughly enjoyed the event and exploring the campus.’

Student Asia said: ‘This was a really great experience. Not only did we get to take part in the competition and do an experiment, but it was also useful and interesting to visit the university, see the facilities and meet some of the people who work and study here.’

Results of the competition will be announced at a future date. The winning teams will then be invited to attend the East Midlands competition in Derby in January.
