KSA gives BookBuzz book to all Year 7s

Kettering Science Academy has presented all Year 7 students with surprise books from the Bookbuzz scheme.

Bookbuzz is a reading programme from BookTrust that aims to help schools inspire a love of reading in 11 to 13-year-olds.

Students in Year 7 were given the opportunity to choose their favourite book as part of their library lessons. Each class took part in a ‘Book Dating’ activity where students had two minutes to look at one of the 17 books on offer, and assess it using speed dating principles of attractiveness and suitability.   At the end of the lesson, each student was asked to vote to for their top three books, and were told the most popular books would be bought for the school library where students could borrow the titles to enjoy.

What the students didn’t realise was that they would be given their favourite title as a present from the library and English department for Christmas.

Over the past two weeks, all students in Year 7 have received their own book to take home and keep from the list of 17 titles. They were all carefully selected by a panel of experts to ensure quality, suitability and to encourage reading for pleasure.

Students will need to bring their chosen book to their English lessons in January, as various activities have been planned around the titles.

Letters have been distributed to students to take home to families.  Please feel free to talk to your child about their chosen book. Librarian Heidi Economou said: ‘The students were particularly excited by the book selection this year, so it has been wonderful to see their joy in actually receiving their gifts from under the library Christmas tree.’
