Students ‘Get Caught Reading’ and win prizes at KSA
A new initiative at Kettering Science Academy which encourages students to read at every opportunity has proved very popular.
Members of the Senior Leadership Team, who ‘catch’ students reading during break and lunch times give them a ticket. These are entered into a raffle box in the library and three students, whose names are drawn at random at the end of term, are presented with prizes.
The scheme demonstrates how much staff value seeing students read in their spare time and it is an effective way of encouraging students to read for pleasure. There is a display about the winning students in the library, along with information about the books that they were reading when ‘caught’.
Librarian Heidi Economou said: ‘“Get Caught Reading alongside DEAR (Drop Everything and Read) has created a real buzz around reading. Both have been a great way for staff to interact with students with regard to their reading choices. It is wonderful that we had over 70 entries for our raffle and it enables us to learn more about what our students are reading. Most importantly all 70 students were caught reading for pleasure in their own time.’
Well done to the following students who won the first ever ‘Get Caught Reading’ prizes:
