Students are looking forward to their forthcoming history trip to the battlefields during the First World War Centenary Year.
The four day trip will see the group of 45, KSA Year 9 and 10 students and staff members staying in Ypres, Belgium.
They will be travelling there on the 15th July and will be visiting Tyne Cot Cemetery and the Menin Gate, as well as going to Sanctuary Wood and spending a day at the Somme before going onto the Thiepval Museum.
History Teacher at the Academy, Marissa Wright, said: “It is a once in a life time opportunity to go on this visit during the centenary year and the trip will complement the students GCSE history syllabus.
“Students will be given the chance to see for themselves the cemeteries of all the soldiers. All the gravestones and crosses at the German cemetery Langemark are all black and grey and this is in contrast to the white gravestones at Tyne Cot.
“Also at Sanctuary Wood the students will get to experience what life was like in the trenches.”
“They will also be a commemorative wreath laid at Menin Gate. This will be a great honour for the students to be part of.”
Miss Wright added:” We are also excited that we are integrating languages into the trip allowing for students to practise their French and German.”
She added: “It is a very poignant trip as well with a lot of the students knowing of someone, whether it is a family member or relative, who has fought in one of the World Wars or maybe serving currently in the forces and I believe it is going be quite emotional.”

Year 10 student, Tara Waterfield said: “I think the trip is going to be very interesting after learning all about World War One and life in the trenches in history it will bring our learning to life.”
Year 10 student, Cameron McIntosh, said: “We are looking forward to being able to lay a wreath as part of the trip; we do not know as yet which students will be chosen to place the wreath.”
Year 10 student, Megan Keech added: “It will be interesting to go and experience what conditions were like in the trenches.”
To end the trip the students will be treated to a visit to a chocolate factory in Belgium.
Students will be going on the trip from 15th -18th July.
