Students and staff at Kettering Science Academy are being invited to the launch event of a new service to help young people affected by cancer.
The C Word launch event is to take place at Northamptonshire Central Library in Abington Street, Northampton, this Saturday 24th January from 11am.
The launch follows on from KSA library’s support for the Stand Up To Cancer campaign, which saw the Academy students and staff sharing their own thoughts on cancer on message clouds, shared on a special wall at the Secondary Phase.
On Saturday, the Northamptonshire County Council Libraries Service will themselves have an ‘Express Yourself About Cancer’ message wall, which will be there for visitors to post up their messages about their own cancer experiences.
Abbie Weaver, Programme Co-ordinator for Macmillan for the Northamptonshire County Council Libraries and Information Service said: “The message wall will be accompanied by a free ‘Have a go at street art’ taster sessions. Both the message wall and graffiti taster sessions will be run by a very talented local street artist, who is extremely enthusiastic about the project and who currently carries out customisation street art workshops with young people to develop not only their own art, but also their self-confidence and their belief in themselves.
She added: “ There are so many young people all around Northamptonshire who are severely affected and struggling to cope with the effects of a cancer diagnosis – whether it is their own or that of a close family member or friend. The more people we can engage with the service from the very beginning, the more chance we have of helping as many of these teenagers and young adults as possible.”
Head Librarian at KSA, Heidi Economou said: “We are really pleased be able to play our part by spreading the word about this new service and we are pleased to show our support the launch event. We will also continue to support the work of the new service by promoting it through our Health and Wellbeing section of our Library.
“The launch event sounds like it will be a great fun way to start raising awareness for the help and support that is to be made available to the young people throughout the county affected by cancer.”
The new service is being provided by Macmillan Cancer Support in partnership with Northamptonshire County Council Libraries and Information Service.
