Confident readers at the Secondary Phase at Kettering Science Academy are being encouraged to take a risk and try a mystery book.
The books have been disguised as part of a new display in the library at KSA called ‘Don’t Judge a Book by its Cover', the books are wrapped up so students are unable to see any of the usual information that helps them with choosing a book.
Head Librarian at KSA, Heidi Economou said: “All of the books have been picked to appeal to both boys and girls and many of the titles have been selected because they have won prestigious book awards over the past five years. The display is aimed at our more able readers as we have noticed that they can become rigid in their book choices, choosing the same genre or author repeatedly. By choosing a book in this ‘pop luck’ way we hope to encourage them to expand their reading choices.”
She added: “To take part students have to agree to read the book, even if it doesn’t appeal to them. The response to the chosen titles has been extremely positive with most readers have been feeding back to the librarians that they enjoyed their book and were surprised as in the most part it would be from a genre or author they would not have selected had it not been for the challenge. I hope that the display encourages students to occasionally try something completely different, they may be surprised by what they find.”
