A great opportunity was given to one of our Year 9 students who qualified to compete in the regional swimming championships and at the event he set two new personal best times.
Austin Reed swims for Kettering Swimming Club and was the only member of his club to qualify for both the 100m and 200m butterfly events at the East Midlands Regional Senior Swimming Championship held in Sheffield on 1st May.
At the championship Austin achieved personal bests in both events and made it through to the Mens final in the 200 fly and finished in 8th place.
Austin said: “It was a great experience to attend the championships for the first time and to then qualify for the final of the 200m butterfly held later on in the day.
“It was interesting being at the event, there was a great atmosphere and I met with some British International swimmers, who were really fast. I was proud to qualify for the county in the final as there was only two of us from Northamptonshire who did so.”
He added: “I enjoy swimming in our local club league competitions and I would like to qualify for the championships again next year.”
Austin's two new Personal Best times were 1 minute and 10 secs for the 100m fly and 2 minutes 38 seconds for the 200m fly.
Austin's mum, Mrs Hilary Reed added: “He has trained very hard to get this far.”
Austin has been swimming for more than four years with Kettering Swimming Club and trains 6 to 8 times a week at the town’s pool.
