Our Year 7 students are being given the opportunity to take ownership of KSA’s science garden at the Secondary Phase.
The development of this outside area is being seen as an exciting new phase for the science department as a whole and will help enhance the teaching of the subject, making some lessons more interactive and hands on in the future.
The first job for the department is to get the garden area cultivated and science teachers, Miss Sophie George and Mr Paul Foster have decided to launch an after school gardening club on Thursdays after the May half term week.
Miss George said: “It is very exciting to provide this opportunity for our students and for them to take ownership of this outside space . We will be looking at different ways to develop the garden to attract wildlife, insects and birds. We will also be looking to create colour through planting, will be hoping to introduce a compost heap and plant a vegetable patch. A lot the ideas for the space have been put forward by our Year 7 students who are already very enthusiastic about the project. We are keen to encourage them to work on the space and get involved with the clearing of the boarders,  the weeding, digging and planting.”
Miss George also said the garden, once it is established, will be used during lessons and will help with looking at topics within science in more detail including; looking at the nutrient cycle, food chains, life cycles, universal indicators and cells.
Miss George added: “It is a fantastic addition to the department and we look forward to seeing it take shape over the coming weeks and months with the help of our students.”
Any interested Year 7s that would like to join the gardening club are being asked to register their interest with Miss George or Mr Foster.
The first gardening club session will take place on Thursday 9th June after school.
