A group of 58 KSA students from Years 7 to 9 were taken to Whipsnade Zoo allowing them to find out more about the science behind the conservation of wild animals and their habitats.
Students visited the zoo in Bedfordshire as part of the Race To The Top programme at the Academy and were given an insight on the day on how the zoo cares for their animals and all about the conservation of a variety of animals as part of the Zoological Society in London.
RTTT and science teacher, Miss Sophie George said: “The aim of the visit was to provide students with more knowledge of the conservation and science behind preserving a variety of animal species and as well as providing them with a behind the scenes look at how the zoo operates within the best interests of the animals. It also gave our students a closer look at some different wild animals. The visit was very successful and it captured all the students’ interest and for some it was the first experience of visiting a zoo or being that close to some of the animals”
Year 9 student Daisy Smith said: “It was a lot of fun and it was great to see all the animals as well as witnessing them being cared for up close.”
Year 7 student Eloise Watts said: “I found it both a fun and interesting visit and great to see the different animals and how they are looked after in a way that is a close as possible to them living in their natural environments.”
Year 8 Student, Harvey Barnard added: “It was fun and enjoyable trip. I did find a lot out about different animals and how they are cared for. We also heard from the zoo staff on their roles on a daily basis looking after the animals and keeping them happy. We watched the Sea lions being fed and the staff explained how they are not asking them to perform for visitors but for people instead to be able to observe them living at Whipsnade.”
