Sixth Form students take part in ‘Read Up’ programme aimed at 16-18 year olds to develop their skills, build their confidence and undertake volunteering in their local environment.

To apply for the mentor role students had to take part in an interview and write a paragraph about themselves explaining why they wanted to become reading mentors and why they thought they would be good at it.

The 7 successful students then took part in a training session that included a range of activities to help them become reading mentors. They learnt how people learn to read and write, explored de-coding to show how challenging reading can be for some people and were shown different reading games they can use to engage the younger students.

Each Sixth Form mentor will now spend 30 minutes a week with two Year 7 students to try and improve their reading ability and make reading fun.

Library Assistant Jenny Brackwell said ‘We have encouraged our Sixth Form students to help improve the younger students' reading skills but this is the first time we have had the charity ‘Beanstalk' come into the school and train them.’
