Students in both phases of Kettering Science Academy are being encouraged to read as many online books as possible as part of a national school reading competition.
The Read for My School programme is set to be launched on Monday, 19th January and KSA students in Years 5, 6 and 7 are being encouraged to take part in the reading challenge.
The competition is to run throughout the Spring Term up until 20th March and during that time pupils will be able to borrow from an online library of more than 150 books.
The books can be freely accessed during the two months of the competition and they are being asked to choose from various titles that have been divided up into 8 genre categories.
As part of the competition individuals are being encouraged to read at least one book from each category but they can also read any book of their choice offline and recommended reading lists will be provided, chosen by an independent panel of children’s book experts.
Books available and recommended have been chosen to suit all reading abilities, including material for pupils with Special Educational Needs.
Every student taking part will be given their own online login allowing them to keep a record of the books they have read and to provide them with the option to submit online reviews.
Head Librarian at Kettering Science Academy, Mrs Heidi Economou said: “The competition’s aim is to encourage the reading of a variety of books and to introduce the students to new genres of books, some of which they might not have chosen to read previously. It is also provides an opportunity for students to expand their reading and to voice and share their opinions on the books they have been reading. New for this year is that students can access books on iPads, Kindles and most tablets.”
Prizes are being offered this year for individual readers and whole schools, awarding schools for creating an excellent whole school reading culture.
Letters explaining more about the Read for My School scheme will be sent home ahead of the competition’s launch within the Academy.
